CompuGuard is a comprehensive software system that is used for access control and alarm monitoring. CompuGuard runs on Windows based computers as the host front end to the vast number of devices to be controlled and monitored. Most control operations are performed by the Reader Alarm Controllers (RACs). CompuGuard provides the user interface to the entire distributed system.
All configuration and control parameters are set by the end user in database files that reside on the computer's hard disk. A consistent, easy to use file control module provides the mechanism to enter, modify or delete system information. Configuration information is downloaded to the RACs in order for them to operate independently. Device setup information is infrequently sent to the RACs after the initial update unless changes occur. Changes that effect cardholder validation are sent automatically as the changes occur.
CompuGuard continuously communicates with all RACs to check if any events have occurred. The RAC sends back any transactions each time it is polled. The events are recorded to the system hard disk and depending on monitor settings, presented to responsible personnel in one or several ways. An alarm can pop-up a line drawing graphic that indicates the location of alarms and dynamically updates the coordinates of any other alarms assigned to the drawing. An alarm can generate a report, alpha-page, special attention message and more.
The most important functions of CompuGuard are those that are not visible. Much time was spent to make the system as reliable and accountable as possible. Multiple processes are monitored by each other. Most program error situations are handled by a swift recovery routine and such events are recorded to a log file. The log file offers evidence of system problems. Failure for a process to automatically recover forces an internal system reset. All changes to any system files are recorded in audit files that reflect even minor alterations.
